Winter Motorcycle Storage: Complete Guide to Protecting Your Bike

By NearRide Team

Proper winter storage is essential to protect your motorcycle from damage during the off-season. Whether you live in a climate with harsh winters or just need to store your bike for an extended period, following these steps will keep your motorcycle in perfect condition.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Ideally, store your motorcycle in a climate-controlled garage or storage unit. If that's not possible, choose a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid storing near windows where temperature fluctuations can cause condensation.

Clean Your Motorcycle Thoroughly

Before storage, give your bike a complete cleaning. Wash and dry thoroughly, then apply wax to painted surfaces and chrome polish to metal parts. This protects against rust and corrosion during storage.

Fuel System Preparation

Fill your gas tank completely to prevent condensation and rust inside the tank. Add a fuel stabilizer according to manufacturer instructions, then run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the treated fuel through the system.

Change Oil and Filter

Old oil contains contaminants that can damage your engine during storage. Change the oil and filter before storing, even if you're not due for a change. Fresh oil protects engine internals.

Battery Care

Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Connect it to a battery tender or maintainer to keep it charged. Never store a battery on a concrete floor, as it can discharge. Check the battery monthly and maintain proper charge levels.

Tire Protection

Inflate tires to proper pressure and consider using a motorcycle stand or lift to take weight off the tires. If you can't use a stand, move the bike periodically to prevent flat spots. Some riders place boards under the tires to keep them off cold concrete.

Protect Against Pests

Mice and other pests can cause serious damage. Plug the exhaust pipe, cover air intakes, and consider placing mothballs or dryer sheets around (but not on) the bike. Check periodically for signs of pests.

Cover Your Motorcycle

Use a breathable motorcycle cover to protect against dust, moisture, and UV damage. Avoid plastic covers that trap moisture. Make sure the cover fits properly and doesn't touch the ground where it can wick moisture.

Lubricate Moving Parts

Lubricate the chain, cables, and pivot points. For chain-driven bikes, clean and lubricate the chain thoroughly. Apply a light coat of oil to exposed metal parts to prevent rust.

Spring Preparation

When it's time to ride again, perform a thorough inspection: check tire pressure and condition, inspect brake fluid and pads, test all lights and electrical systems, check for leaks, and verify the battery is fully charged. Start with a short test ride before longer trips.

Documentation

Keep a checklist of what you've done for storage, and note any issues you noticed. This makes spring preparation easier and helps you catch problems early.
